Outreach & Advocacy

At Abilities First, outreach and advocacy are woven into every level of our work. Each program supports people with disabilities directly, ensuring they have access to the services, resources, and opportunities needed to live the life they choose.

Beyond Individual Supports

Our teams provide training and resources that promote inclusion and awareness across schools, workplaces, and the community. At a broader level, our President and CEO serves as an ally by engaging with elected officials and stakeholders whose decisions shape policies and systems that impact the lives of people with disabilities. Together, these efforts create stronger communities where belonging and choice are possible for all.

Community Investment Through Levy Funding

Senate Bill 40 is enabling legislation (205.968 through 205.972) passed by the Missouri state legislature in 1969 and is designed to allow individual counties in Missouri to approve a tax levy to provide support to persons with developmental disabilities in areas of residential, vocational, and related services.

In 1978, the citizens of Greene County voted to levy a property tax dedicated to supporting people with developmental disabilities. Since then, these funds have been stewarded by the Abilities First Board to strengthen services, expand opportunities, and support people and families in our community.

Our commitment is to use these resources as a catalyst for impact, enhancing services and filling gaps, rather than replacing other essential funding sources.

By working alongside community agencies, we help ensure that Greene County remains a place where people with developmental disabilities and their families have access to meaningful supports. This collaboration brings additional resources into our community and creates a stronger network of opportunities.

Project funding is at the sole discretion of the priority of the Abilities First Board of Directors and identified unmet needs. Funds provided by the Abilities First Board are not intended to constitute a permanent or recurring portion of the annual budget of any recipient. Funding by the Abilities First Board to not-for-profit service providers shall be used to augment rather than supplant funding received from other sources. If you’re interested in applying for levy funds please contact Maggie Rollwagen at maggie@abilitiesfirst.net with the subject line ‘Levy Funding’.

Below, you’ll find a list of our grant recipients, organizations that share our mission and demonstrate excellence in serving people and families. Together, we are building opportunities for today and for generations to come.
